Chapter 1089

A full day had gone by.

Once again, it was time to report to the Azure Dragon Division. This time, I would be assigned permanent quarters, so I prepared to check out of the temporary inn I had been using since that morning.

I had stayed there for three days at most, spending what I had earned from hunting monstrous beasts. I felt no particular attachment to the place; it was just somewhere to sleep.

I could have left without a second thought, but I decided to have a light breakfast first. I ordered a bowl of somen noodles, ate quickly, and got ready to go.

Then—

I stiffened.

I felt a presence nearby. When I turned, I saw a face I recognized, staring back at me with wide, surprised eyes.

It was the same person I had met previously.

“Tang Seon… wasn’t it?”

A member of the Tang Clan, known in this age as the Venomous Phoenix. The last time we met, she had approached me, saying she was interested in who I was.

Tang Seon, whose features closely resembled those of Tang So-yeol, stood completely still, her eyes fixed on me.

I held her gaze for a moment before speaking first.

“I hope you’ve been well?”
“Wha—? Oh, yes… I have.”
“Good.”

I gave a slight nod. There was no need to prolong the conversation. After a brief hesitation, Tang Seon bowed politely.

I returned the gesture with a nod and took note of what she was wearing.

“She doesn’t appear to belong to any faction.”

She was dressed in the Tang Clan’s martial attire, which meant she wasn’t part of any Sword Corps under the Martial Alliance. The fact that she was staying in a place like this suggested she wasn’t officially aligned with any group.

“Well then… I’ll be going.”
“Yes.”

My interest faded, and I began to move on, assuming I wouldn’t cross paths with her again.

But just then—

“Sister…”

Another person approached Tang Seon.

Another familiar face. As expected.

“The Venomous Dragon… no, the Poison Dragon.”

Tang Cheongi.

The future Clan Leader of the Tang Clan, the one destined to become the Poison King.

Dressed in a uniform I recognized, he walked over to Tang Seon.

“Right, I’d heard Tang Seon was the Poison Dragon’s older sister.”

I hadn’t known the Poison King had a sister. Then again, it was strange I knew anything about him at all.

“Besides, she’s someone I never knew in the future.”

The Venomous Phoenix of this era was a figure completely absent from my memories of the future.

The name Tang Seon meant nothing to me. Had she been notable, I would have remembered.

Since I didn’t—

“She must have died.”

Either she met a tragic end, or she simply wasn’t significant enough to be recorded in history.

“Still…”

The more I looked, the more undeniable the resemblance became.

Tang Seon’s face was nearly identical to Tang So-yeol’s.

“…Hm.”

The only real difference was… well, their figures weren’t exactly the same. But that wasn’t important.

As I studied her with a faint sense of nostalgia and mild detachment—

“What are you looking at?”

Beside her, Tang Cheongi frowned and spoke directly to me.

“Hm?”
“Do you have business with us? Or with my sister?”
“…Cheongi? No, that’s not what—”
“And you, Sister. I arranged proper lodging for you. Why are you staying in a place like this? It took me forever to find you.”
“…Ahaha.”

Tang Seon laughed awkwardly at Tang Cheongi’s words.

From the sound of it, there was some unresolved tension between them.

But—

“If you had gone where I arranged, you wouldn’t have gotten mixed up with someone like him.”

“Someone like me?”

I hadn’t expected Tang Cheongi to say something like that to my face.

“Unbelievable.”

“Cheongi!”

Tang Seon’s expression tightened at his words.

“That was incredibly rude. Apologize. Now.”

Her tone was sharp and left no room for argument. Tang Cheongi flinched under her reprimand.

“…Sister.”
“Now.”

With a frustrated scowl, Tang Cheongi bit his lip. Then, scowling deeply, he spat out—

“Forget it. I’ll bring some warriors from the Tang Clan. Just wait here.”

“Cheongi!”

Ignoring her, Tang Cheongi turned and strode out of the inn.

I simply watched, saying nothing.

“Haah.”

Tang Seon let out a soft sigh, then turned to me with an apologetic look.

“I’m sorry. My younger brother is still so immature… Please allow me to apologize on his behalf.”
“It’s fine.”

I offered a thin smile.

“It seems he cares about you a great deal.”

I’d been through this kind of situation before.

After dealing with Namgung Cheonjun, I’d built up a tolerance for this behavior. This was nothing in comparison.

“Still, it’s somewhat amusing.”

Of all the heirs to the Four Noble Clans, the Poison King was the only one I had ever considered halfway decent.

Knowing that his younger self acted like this was surprising.

Though, of course—

“He’s still better than the Sword King.”

The Sword King was in a league of his own. Compared to that madman, the Poison King seemed almost saintly.

“Really, it’s alright. Don’t worry about it.”

I reassured Tang Seon as I stood up.

I didn’t want to get involved. I’d already crossed paths with too many people in the short time I’d been here.

Thinking that, I walked past her.

“Ah.”

She seemed to want to say something, as if about to stop me.

But I didn’t wait. In the end, she didn’t call out.

Leaving Tang Seon behind, I stepped out of the inn and nodded quietly to myself.

“Now that I think about it…”

I wasn’t sure about Tang Seon, but Tang Cheongi’s uniform—

That was…

“Wasn’t that the uniform of the Iron Dragon Division?”

Unlike the Azure Dragon Division, the Iron Dragon Division had its own distinct attire.

For some reason, that detail stuck in my mind.

“But why?”

I didn’t think I had any reason to be involved with the Iron Dragon Division.

And yet—

Why did I have such a bad feeling about this?

That suspicion would soon be confirmed.

Because, as always—

My bad premonitions were never wrong.

******

“I am Jo Yahyuk, Deputy Commander of the Iron Dragon Division. I will be overseeing today’s joint training.”

“……”

The moment I entered the Azure Dragon Division grounds, I was practically swept away elsewhere. I had arrived early, expecting morning drills—

But as soon as I showed up, they announced a joint training session and led us out.

I followed along, and we soon gathered in the mountains where other martial artists were already waiting.

“As some of you have been informed, today will involve joint training between the Azure Dragon Division and the Iron Dragon Division.”

At Jo Yahyuk’s words, the members of the Iron Dragon Division nodded in acknowledgment.

The Azure Dragon Division, however, wore entirely different expressions.

“…These people.”

Their faces made it clear they had no idea this was happening.

From what I could tell—

“Don’t tell me… the Blue Flame Sword Master forgot to tell us?”

That man.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it had simply slipped his mind.

Somewhere in the distance, I could almost hear his careless, “Ah! Hahaha!” laughter echoing.

As if to confirm my suspicion, Sword Peak Soi and the other senior members taking part in the training all looked deeply troubled.

“Unbelievable.”

This division is a complete disaster.

“Joint training, is it?”

Being thrown into a joint exercise right after arriving… I’d never heard of such a thing.

From what little I could gather, this training was meant only for those who had been in the Martial Alliance for three years or less.

“And it just happens to be between the Azure Dragon and Iron Dragon Divisions?”

Sensing an intense stare, I turned—

And there, among the assembled Iron Dragon Division members, was someone looking directly at me.

Or rather—glaring.

The Poison Dragon, Tang Cheongi.

His sharp, hostile gaze was fixed on me.

“Tch.”

So, I’d been marked.

He was clearly still upset about what happened earlier.

“Really, what is it with these people?”

Whether it’s the Sword Dragon or the Poison Dragon—

They’re all a little strange.

Future Clan Heads shouldn’t be acting like this.

Suppressing a sigh, I turned away.

“His father isn’t here.”

It seemed Tang Cheongi’s father—the Poison King—wasn’t participating.

I’d heard his father was also in his third year, but it appeared he wasn’t part of this session.

Aside from that—

“The Sword Dragon isn’t here either.”

The one I’d beaten before—he must still be recovering. That, at least, was a small relief.

“Ugh, I’m on edge. You feel it too, right, Comrade Baek?”

The one who’d been sticking close to me, Do Yun, spoke with a nervous laugh.

I glanced at him and nodded.

“A little?”
“Hahaha! You’re lying. You don’t look nervous at all.”

He wasn’t wrong.

I wasn’t nervous in the slightest.

After all—

“This joint training is just another monstrous beast hunt, isn’t it?”

A group of rookies gathering to take down monstrous beasts together—

It was more of a teamwork exercise than serious training.

“Besides, the beasts we’re dealing with are only green and blue rank.”

Even red-ranked beasts weren’t much of a threat. Green and blue? Even less so.

This joint training didn’t concern me.

Something else was on my mind.

And—

“This guy is bothering me, too.”

Do Yun.

The one who kept acting overly familiar.

He was getting on my nerves.

There was something off about him.

I studied Do Yun for a moment.

“What is it?”
“Nothing. The training is about to start. Focus.”
“Oh, right. Understood.”

Just as Do Yun replied, Jo Yahyuk raised his voice.

“Alright! Training begins now. Everyone, take out your demon-tracking talismans.”

At his command, everyone quickly retrieved the talismans from their robes.

“As explained earlier, the training is simple. You will hunt monstrous beasts. Throughout the process, your performance will be evaluated and scored.”

Several figures stepped forward beside Jo Yahyuk—senior members, their cultivation levels far beyond ours.

“Hm.”

As I watched the talismans flutter in the wind, I considered my approach.

“How far should I take this?”

Should I actually put in effort?

Or should I hold back and keep a low profile?

I was momentarily undecided.

******

Meanwhile—

While the recruits were gathering for their training, deep within the mountain range—at its very core—

Crack—!
Crackle—!!

A sudden rift tore through the silence.

Under normal circumstances, the appearance of monstrous beasts in these mountains wouldn’t be unusual.

But this—

Crackle—!!!

Shattering the stillness, a demonic rift appeared.

It was not the usual green or blue—

CRACKLE—!!!!

It was a deep, blood-red fissure.

Grrrrrrr……

And from within—

Emerged a sound unlike any green or blue-ranked beast.

This—

Was an anomaly.
